Melvin, a resident of Magnolia, Texas, passed away on November 7, 2017, in Tomball, at the age of 87.
Melvin was born April 5, 1930, in Morgan City, LA, to Jack and Dolly Francis. He graduated from Buras High School in Louisiana. He served in the U.S. Air Forc as an airplane mechanic, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Melvin then became a Louisiana State Trooper in the Plaquemines Parish. He has lived in the Houston area since 1967 and moved to Magnolia in 1998. Once he moved to Houston, he was employed with HCSO in 1972, as a court bailiff, and eventually a court coordinator. He retired in 1995 from adult probations and started volunteering at Magnolia Elementary, reading to first graders and telling them the stories of his life in the military.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his sister, Betty Ann Touchette.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Francis, of Magnolia; daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Shawn Collins, of Magnolia; three grandchildren, Justin and Sandra Alvarado, of Cypress; Andrew and Bella Collins of Wahiawa, Hawaii; Sarah Collins, of Magnolia: two great-grandchildren, Milo and Juliana; and his loyal four legged companion Peter.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Magnolia Elementary School library, to purchase books in Mr. Francis name. Donations can be sent to Magnolia Elementary Library, 31900 Nichols Sawmill Rd, Magnolia, TX 77355
